It's
205 Km far from the Sicilian coast and is located 113 Km
far from Tunisia. Even if it's part of Italian country,
Lampedusa is, considering the geological conformation, related
to African continent, which platform is attached to.
The island, togheter with Lampione, was originated from
the Africa emersion, as environmental characteristics of
both the two suggest. It's 20 square Km wide, extending
from east to west for a little more than 9 Km and its maximum
width is 3 Km. The only bult-up ares is Lampedusa placed
in a South-Eastern coast cove.
The
coast
The
coast from Capo Grecale until Cala Galera can be accessed
easily.
Going along the coast clockwise until Capo Levante the first
cove you can meet is Cala Calandra, broken by the majestity
of a deep cave.
Then there is Cala Creta, that offers to the boats a safe
place from the wind coming from west. Here there is not
a beach, but a handy platform good for the suntan.
Cala
Pisana, natural alternative to Lampedusa harbour, whose
functionality is improved by a little landing, and Cala
Uccello, Punta Parrino and Punta Sottile, that is just only
a metre over the sea level, are the successive coves.
Going towards south, you can find Cala Francese beach, the
Grottaccia, that, modeled by sea abrasion, is a mandatory
stop for the boats that are looking for some shade.
Cala
Maluk, Cala Spugne, and the Harbour where until the 1800
lumber traffics were done.
The
most beautiful beaches are the ones in Cala Guitgia, Cala
Croce and Cala Madonna, that offer a shelter fromTramontana,
Grecale and Levante winds.
Under
the sea
A lot of living forms can be found in Lampedusa depth, also
the harbour is full of various kinds of fish.
For underwater photographers
hapiness, big saraghi (Diplodus sargus) and some stone basses
(Sarranus gigas) can be found along the southern coast.
In the Rabbits island
open sea a group of big rocks it's the ideal environment
for stone basses and corvine (Sciaena umbra). On the bottom
made by sand and posidonie, that goes towards Capo Ponente
it's easy to find big jew's harps (Dasyatis centroura) stationary
on flying.
The other face of Lampedusa starts from Capo Ponente: from
here on the bottom is really various, and it's accompanied
both by a group of isolated cliffs, located near the shore,
and by shallows populated by big stone basses, like the
one located to the North of: from the 30 to the 65/70 m
going on for 1 Km towards the open sea, other than cernie
you can find corvine, lobsters (Palinurus vulgaris) and
murene (Muraena helena).
The
climate
Lampedusa island differs from other places that can be found
in the same latitude, because it has a moderate climate.
It's made moderate from the winds and from the white rock
that make the sun rays less aggressive.
Often it happens that the energic wind activity
from the fourth face (North-West) make it possible that
the clouds let the place to the sun.
